WINNING HOUSE: Lawson |
What if instead of a house made of sweets and candy, Hansel and Gretel were actually lured in by a house of brussel sprouts? Or instead of Rapunzel being locked in a high tower, she was forced to stay in a luxurious beach house? These are the fun tales that students in Year Two have been dreaming up this term.
We have read many humorous and exciting twisted fairy tales such as Previously, Once Upon a Time Online, The Paper Bag Princess and some classes read Roald Dahl’s hilarious Revolting Rhymes. We have seen our favourite fairy tale characters given a brand new story.
From these, we learned the narrative structure and many things that could make our writing really special: sizzling starts, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, alliteration and dialogue. It was then our turn to try and create our own narrative, either by twisting stories ourselves or creating our own characters and plot lines.
While quite a difficult process, the students approached it with gusto, each working to the best of their potential to produce a narrative of their own. Have a read of some of these samples. Ask your child what their narrative was about!
Long ago, in the year 1786, Little Blue Riding Hood’s mother baked a delicious gingerbread man for the boy to take to her grandmother’s house. She lived in a small wooden hut near the beach. At the beach, Little Blue Riding Hood saw something that looked like a car and within it there was a strange dial. He twisted the dial and when he went to get out of the car he bumped the launch button.

Draco was in a magic school, Hogwarts, but before we learn more about him, let’s figure out how he even got there? It all started with Draco Malfoy at his cousins’ muggle house. His cousins knew he was a wizard but never told him. Now you might be wondering, why is he not in his family’s house?
Ali 1/2 MC
“Help me!” said a petrified voice from the bitter cold and haunted mansion. Jack and Zac were getting scared. “Runnnn!” They were now sprinting down the cramped pathway to the abandoned street. They were being chased. But by who?

Once upon a time there was a smart girl called Crystal. She was turning into a late girl! She knew that her teacher would be strict with her if she was late. The reason why is because at Manly Rainbow High tests are always in the morning (if there were any tests). There was a test!

In a beautiful house in an AMAZING GARDEN lived Amy! She was a pretty little girl that had dark brown hair, blue eyes and peachy coloured skin. Her house was white and the roof was bright red. She lived with her lovely mother, father, grandma and grandpa. Her mother cooked delicious food, cleaned the clothes very well and washed the dishes carefully. Her dad went to work every day to earn money. Finally, her grandpa and grandma fixed clothes for money too.

"Mum, can I go outside?" called Mary from her bedroom. No answer. Mary was sitting on her eiderdown blanket. She stared, longing to go outside. Outside, snow was pouring down. Mary lived in a 'yellow with age' brick house. She had been a weirdo ever since she was born. She felt like a weirdo. Mary had wavy, long brown hair and blue beady eyes. She always wore a ragged colourful dress. Her parents never allowed her to go outside, but today this was her chance to be free! "Finally," thought Mary.

Then I saw a four armed, two headed monster. I also saw a dragon with four heads, two wings, three tails with huge rocks stuck on them and four arms. It roared with all its might and the dragon and the monster charged at us.

Peter took a razor-sharp blade from his belt and thrust it at the monster. A slimy tentacle crawled onto the sword with Peter dangling from it. Peter used all his strength and cut a long tentacle. It howled horribly in the cave. A wave of golden blood rushed down.

In addition to email communication, we encourage you to regularly check Newsflash for upcoming events and important Strings updates.
Registration for Music Camp has been sent out last week, please keep an eye out for this and register before Monday 28th June.
Strings instruments tuning
With the drop in temperature, this change plays havoc with the instrument being in tune. We have noted a few broken strings which required to be replaced. First point of call, please bring your instrument to the music room at recess as there will always be a strings tutor that will be able to assist and tune the instrument.

Music Camp – Register by Monday 28th June
Dear Music Parents and Carers,
We are excited to announce that the 2021 Music Camp will be going ahead on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August for all BAND and STRING members Year 4 and above.
This year the camp will be held at The Collaroy Centre, 22 Homestead Ave, Collaroy NSW 2097. Ph 9982 9800
The camp is a wonderful opportunity for the children to consolidate their musical skills and also rehearse for the end of year concert.
You have recently received an email from the music camp coordinator via the artarmonmusiccamp@gmail.com address. Please take a moment to review the notice emailed to you which covers off important information about the upcoming music camp.
ACTION REQUIRED - Registration and Payment
You need to register your child for the Music Camp using the TryBooking website. There are no paper forms and payment is by credit card or debit card only.
Your child must be registered by no later than Monday the 28th of June, as we must notify final numbers to the venue at that time.
To register go to: https://www.trybooking.com/BSAQK.
The cost for the 2021 Music Camp is $220 per student.
We are also looking for parent volunteers to help support the coordination of the weekend. If you are able to assist, please note your preference when registering your child via the trybooking platform.
The band students are very excited that the music camp can go ahead this year and we would like to thank our wonderful music teachers, conveners and parent volunteers in advance for the contribution you all make to enriching our children's lives.
Volunteers needed.
We still need to fill the following volunteer roles to assist with Strings in 2021/2022:
- STRINGS CO-CONVENOR: Assists Convenor with insurances, instrument purchases, newsflash writeups, replies to email queries, updates MSM portal, event planning, liaises with Strings committee, uniform shop, school, and Mr Mansukhani. Takes over the reins of Convenor for a minimum 2-year term. Requires work in your own home. Approximately 2 hours a week.
By volunteering you will be making a valuable contribution to the running of the String program and your child(ren) will love to see you get involved.
If you are interested in volunteering for one of these roles or would like more information, please email strings.artarmonpandc@gmail.com
Reminders
Invoices are required to be paid by the end of March. Failure to do so may mean that your child will not be able to attend ensemble rehearsals from this week. Please check your email/junk mail for invoice and payment details.
All hard copy invoices have been printed and given to those students that are yet to provide payment. Your child will also have a copy of the invoice that has been printed and kept in their music folder.
If you intend to use Creative Kids vouchers towards payment for Strings fees, please ensure you pay $100 less than the total invoice. Please consider the administration headache for the Strings Team volunteers if you decide later that you would like to use the Creative Kids Voucher. Thanks for your understanding.
If you have any questions related to an invoice or payment, email stringstreasurer@gmail.com
Got a question?
If it is about your hired instrument or instrumental tutorial, please contact your tutor at first instance.
