OPPORTUNITY CLASS APPLICATIONS
Opportunity classes cater for academically gifted and talented students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.
Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the combined results of the Opportunity Class Placement Test and school assessments. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2019.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 5 opportunity class entry in 2020, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from Tuesday 30 April 2019 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5
The application website opens on Tuesday 30 April 2019 and closes on Friday 17 May 2019. You must apply by the due date.
There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Team for assistance after 30 April 2019.

PSSA T-ball and Oz-tag: Term One Report
This term, many students in Years 4, 5 and 6 participated in PSSA T-ball and Oz-tag. Overall, we had 14 teams that took part in these competitions. Unfortunately we only got to play a few games this season due to some bad weather and field closures. However, during these games the students had a lot of fun and learnt the rules of T-ball and Oz-tag. We also had many wins during this short period. The students trained very hard each Friday morning and many Friday afternoons. They should be commended for their efforts and the development of their skills. Each student showed great improvement and also demonstrated exceptional behaviour throughout the term. A special thanks to the T-ball and Oz-tag coaches for their dedication this term- Mrs Wilkinson, Mr Hand, Mr Thompson, Mr Maxwell & Miss Waters (now Mrs Tully- congratulations). The T-ball and Oz-tag teams couldn’t do it without you!
We are all looking forward to an exciting term 2 where many students will participate in PSSA netball, soccer and AFL.

Boys Knockout Cricket Round 1 - Artarmon Vs Lane Cove
The Artarmon boys cricket team arrived early to a misty Blackman Park, eager to begin their knockout campaign. Greeted with a damp synthetic oval, Captain Justin Nielsen won the toss and elected to bat, a wise choice. Kevin and Martin got off to a great start, taking 24 from the first 8 overs before Kevin held out to mid off. Martin lost his wicket the following over and while Lane Cove thought they could smell a collapse the next two batsman had other ideas. Justin methodically went about his innings, dispatching the poor deliveries and racing to 41 retired. Meanwhile Mithun scored freely making 27 before losing his wicket. Lane Cove slowed the scoring in the final three overs, before Hayden took the final over for 10, bringing our total to 6/143.
As our bowling innings began, the opposition were quick to compare Justin to Australia’s left arm Paceman Mitchell Starc. The comparison only fired him up and he was unlucky not to take an early wicket. Bowling from the other end, Jonothan pitched the ball consistently and in his 3rd over bowled both openers. Hayden bowled with impact, taking 2/4 from his three overs before putting on the gloves to wicket-keep. The Lane Cove batsman showed grit as they plugged their way through overs 9 to 22 making a 70 run partnership without the loss of a wicket. With the final 5 overs looming, tight bowling was needed and that was what our boys delivered, culminating in a sensational final over from Jack taking a wicket and stopping Lane Cove short of the required total at 7/123.
On we go to round 2. We have once again drawn a formidable opponent in Neutral Bay Public School who have knocked us from the draw the last three years. With our fierce bowling and batting line-ups maybe this will be our year.

Coach

Mental Health in Children
The emotional wellbeing of students is just as important as their physical health; in fact wellbeing and learning must exist together.
Mindfulness builds the foundations for optimal student focus and concentration. It is a skill for life.
Research has shown that one in seven primary aged children and one in four secondary aged children are experiencing mental health problems. Good mental health also allows children to develop resilience to cope with stress, such as testing and the pressure to perform. It allows children to grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
Mindfulness meditation is about mental health and looking after the mind. It takes just 10 minutes a day and there are many free apps such as ‘Smiling Mind’ that parents can download and use at home. https://app.smilingmind.com.au/
This holidays, give mindfulness meditation a try!

Thank you to those who came along last night to our committee meeting. It was great to exchange some good ideas for the future and to plan out some of the upcoming events. Enjoy the Easter break, enjoy your holidays, and see you next term.
Ensemble Photos Tomorrow Thursday April 11th
All string groups are having their photos taken tomorrow. Make sure your child pays attention to any speaker announcements and is wearing full school summer uniform with black shoes. Those also doing PSSA photos will have to take sports clothes to change into.
Mothers’ Day Concert May 9th
Let me know if you can help out on the Thursday morning for our annual Mothers’ Day concert early next term. I’ll need some hands on deck to pick up the yummy finger buns and some on deck to help out at the stall. Others will be needed to corral the music students in an orderly fashion (good luck with that).
Training Strings starts first day of Term 2
Remember to bring instruments on the first day back next term. Rehearsal is in the music room Tuesday lunch.
Payments due
Invoices have gone out now for ensemble fees and instrument hire. Please email the treasurer (stringstreasurer@gmail.com) if you have not received one or if you have any questions about your invoice.
Creative Kids voucher
Remember, if you want to use the Creative Kids voucher, please log on to the music parent portal at https://portal.msmusic.com.au/artarmonmusic and provide the details. As per previous instructions, if you wish to use the Creative Kids voucher you must pay $100 less than your invoice total. We will then credit the $100 against your invoice when we have redeemed the voucher from Service NSW. You must do this before your pay.
Please update your child’s class details and your contact details in the parent portal – this is important for a lot of reasons.
