CONGRATULATIONS MATTHEW!
An amazing achievement for Matthew Fang to be selected and represent Sydney North at the recent NSW State championships for Basketball. With such a small number of students chosen in the team, we are so proud of Matthew and his success in the sport and wish him all the best for his future endeavours.
I asked Matthew to share with us all his experience.
Matthew Fang:
From Tuesday the 31st of May to Friday the 3rd of June, I was at Tamworth Sports Dome representing Sydney North in the NSW Basketball State Championships. Sydney North was the winner in 2021 and we were aiming for back to back champions. There were a total of 14 teams for the boys and 14 for the girls with each team consisting of 10 players which amounted to roughly 280 boys and girls in this entire competition. On the first day (Tuesday) we played Sydney West and beat them 49-33. I also scored a buzzer beater this game. Then, we played South Coast and won 55-28. On the second day, Wednesday, we played Hunter, beating them 53-31. Then we won against Polding 43-25. To start things off for day 3, we smashed Western 75-13 and then ended up beating North coast 51-18.
Going 6-0 secured us as 1st in our pool which meant that we would be playing the team that came 2nd in the other pool, which ended up being Mackillop, for the semi finals. We were down by 10 at the end of the first quarter which was not a good start. Then, we began coming back slowly due to our great defense. This proved our team motto was true: Offense sells tickets, defense wins games. We then ended up beating Mackillop by 10 points with the final score being 43-33.
We were now in the finals.
Our matchup was CIS which stood for Combined Independent Schools. Public vs Private. At the end of the first quarter, it was 10-4 and we were down. By the end of the second, it was 16-15. We had managed to catch up quite a lot. During the middle of the 4th quarter, we were again down by 10 with the score being 36-26. We needed to do something fast. We gave it our all in the last 5 minutes but it wasn't enough. We lost 35-38, a very close game. Overall, it was a new experience and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I made lots of great friends with my teammates and two of our team's players ended up getting selected for state.
