EAL/D NEWS
Stage 3 EAL/D students have been learning to write complex sentences and add more description to their writing.
The students worked together as a group to discuss the focus picture and what could be happening. We discussed the picture using a thinking routine called: See, Think, Wonder.
They were then given very simple sentences to improve. The students each wrote a paragraph to describe the scene. After some editing, the students gave each other constructive feedback to suggest ways their writing could be further improved.
Original simple sentences
They stood in the field. They were a bit scared. They were wearing bubbles.
Complex Sentences
The survivors, who were slightly frightened, stood bewilderedly in the middle of nowhere, which was a vile wasteland. While they wore oxygen bubbles on their heads, they looked at the sky excitedly as they were looking forward to a new world. By Mark Xuan
The explorers stood in the gross wasteland, which is full of garbage and plastic. They were slightly frightened because the world had ended and there will be a war at the Elysium. They were wearing watery bubbles, which were filled with oxygen, to keep them alive from the deadly, poisonous toxins in the atmosphere. by Porsche Manmor
We have also played games to help the students improve their ability to use complex sentences correctly.
