ETHICS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Primary Ethics in Artarmon Public School

Every Thursday morning a group of volunteers arrive at our school to conduct Primary Ethics lessons.

We are volunteers from all walks of life:

Sprina Chen – Ethics Coordinator, APS parent.

Barry Richardson –Former APS parent, retired Lawyer.

Sue Howard – Grandparent and Office Manager.

Stephanie Bone – APS parent.

Alyson Russell – APS parent, Diversional Therapist.

Peter Wang – APS parent, IT Professional.

Moni Limbu – APS parent, Management Analyst.

Judy Yeung – APS parent, Lawyer.

We do not “teach” children how to be ethical; or tell them how to think, instead, we encourage them to apply critical thinking. In our classes, children listen to a range of stories and scenarios pitched at their own age level and then share ideas on what they think they ought to do in these situations. The focus is on students developing the skill to identify ethical issues and to think critically in developing their own reasoned opinions, as they engage in respectful discussion with the other children.

The numerous topics we discuss cover all aspects of human thinking and behaviours, such as, but not limited to,

-Bragging

-Being selfish, being greedy

-Breaking a promise

-Imaging how others feel

-Should we keep animals in captivity?

-How do we treat living things?

-How do we disagree in a respectful way?

- Structure of arguments

- How far does our moral responsibility extend?

Ethics classes rely on parents, grandparents and people who are community minded. It’s a rewarding volunteer role that only involve one hour or so per week but has a big impact on our students. Primary Ethics offers free training, full lesson materials and ongoing support.
