EAL/D PROGRAM
K-6 English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D) program
One of the greatest strengths of Artarmon is its fantastic and diverse multicultural community. In 2023, 86% of students at Artarmon identified as having a language background other than English. In other words, either they or at least one of their parents, speak a language other than English at home.
Artarmon’s EAL/D program involves teachers working closely with small groups of students from EAL/D backgrounds to build on the work they are doing in the classroom. In Term Four, students in K-2 have been developing their English language learning through speaking, listening, reading and writing activities.

Miss Marshall’s EAL/D groups in Years 3 to 6 have been working on descriptive writing. Earlier this term, they looked at Jeannie Baker’s book Window that uses pictures to tell the story of a boy and his garden changing through the years.
Year 3 students described the first picture (above), where the boy is a baby.
Year 4 students wrote about a second picture, where the boy is two years old.
Years 5 and 6 students wrote about another picture, where the boy is four.
