Welcome to Wednesday Week 8!
I hope all the Dads and Father figures in our children's lives had an amazing Father's Day on Sunday and spent some quality time together making memories and relaxing together.
A huge thank you to our parents and community members for supporting our students with their Colour fun Walkathon sponsorship forms. I know excitement is building this year with the addition of the rainbow Holi powder and the class competition to see who will be the over all winner to get the popcorn and movie party.
A few Walkathon things to remember:
- Years 3-6 on Thursday
- Years K-2 on Friday
- No school uniform on the day - Please wear a white shirt, shorts/pants and closed in shoes ie. joggers
- Each child will be given a pair of sunglasses to wear on the day
- Face masks available if needed
- Options for your child to walk around the powder area if you prefer.
- All monies raised will go into our landscaping project between the hall and canteen areas.
- The addition of the Holi powder into our Walkathon is purely for enjoyment and fun!
KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE
Issues arise on the playground and with friendships when children are exposed to inappropriate material on the internet at a young age. As parents, it is our responsibility to ensure we are aware and know what and how our children are accessing the internet and the content they are exposed to.
Online safety education is most effective when staff and families understand the complementary roles they play in educating young people — both in and out of school.
At Artarmon, we are keen to engage with the whole school community as active and valued participants in online safety, as it is important for creating and maintaining a safe online environment for the children in our care.
The following Federal and NSW Government websites and resources may be helpful in supporting ongoing discussions around cyber safety with your children:

STUDENT LEADERS AT STATE PARLIAMENT
Written by Kayleee Wong, School Captain
On Tuesday the 5th of September, four of Artarmon’s’ Student Leaders travelled into the city to visit our local member for Willoughby, Tim James, for a tour of the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council Chamber at the NSW State Parliament.
We were greeted by the staff and started on some refreshments. Mr James then gave an inspiring speech to all who attended, giving personal gratitude for everyone’s outstanding contributions to their schools, as well as giving us valuable leadership advice. Mr James then presented his 2023 Certificates of Leadership.
We were then delighted to be given a tour of the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council Chamber where we learned various topics about leadership, the history of the NSW State Parliament, how it works, and much more.
Overall, Artarmon Public School’s Student Leaders had a wonderful day at the New South Wales State Parliament. As Tim James’ inspiring advice stays in our hearts and minds, we hope to inspire others as we pass on the message.
THOMPSON OVAL UPGRADE
Starting in the holidays, Thompson Oval will begin its resurfacing project to create a brand new oval for the school and community to use.
The concept design includes
- U12 soccer field to match the feedback from the sports user groups
- Levelling the field at the southern end (cricket net) to increase the usable space
- Perimeter athletics track
- Retractable net to separate organised sports groups and general community
- Storage area
- Pick up and drop off areas near the oval. If students are dropped off or meet you on Reserve Rd they will need to walk up / down Barton Rd or use the pathway behind the school and the park near the basketball courts.
Please ensure you talk to your child / children about any changes that may impact your family situation.

Opera Australia Comes to APS
Opera Australia is an opera company that performs on stage with a combination of music, song, and story. On Monday the 28th of August, year 5 had the delight of watching an opera by 4 actor\singers and one skilled musician.
The show, Eil Kid, lasted 60 minutes and the music persisted throughout the performance. The singers set up all the props and sets, in the school hall. All of year 5 enjoyed the play.
El Kid is an opera based on The Three Billy Goats Gruff, with new aspects of entertainment to make the story more interesting. Diego (the baby goat) is being ridiculed by his siblings, as they make their way to the Fiesta. Isabella and Ferdinand (the older siblings) try to scare a troll away From the bridge. However, the troll threatens to eat them, so the burden is passed on to Diego. Rather than running away, Diego tricks the troll, and has a newfound respect from Ferdinand and Isabella· the play was sung so that the audience would see the story through Diego's eyes.

Monday, the 28th of August, year 5 had been fortunate enough to have Opera Australia come to our school. The Opera had come to educate us through Opera. We had watched it in the hall in the middle session.
The Opera was called El Kid. This story was the appropriation of the story called The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Cinderella. This was so as the three characters, Diego, Ferdinand and Isabella were like three goats. They each wanted to go past the bridge, past the troll to get to the festival. The story is also an appropriation of the story Cinderella as Diego's to siblings bullied him and didn't want him to go to the festival.
This Opera was quite a unique one. There were fake cacti with oranges growing on them! The bridge was made of stones and had a flap available for the troll to pop out. The story was told with loud singing. The Opera had come to our school with a quick stage set up and beautiful costumes. This has been an amazing experience for us!

On Monday the 28th of August Year Five went to watch a play in the hall as a part of our Music Program. It was a great play and Year Five loved it.
The play was an appropriation of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Instead it was about a man called Ferdinan and a woman called Isabella who wonts to go to a Festival. But they come across a troll who is very hungry. The troll wanted to eat one of the humans but instead a very young boy named Diego, who gets bullied by his siblings Ferdinan and Isabella saved the day by banishing the troll by his magic which his siblings never believed in.
The real names of the actors were Lachlan who played Diego, Tristen who played Ferdinan, Bridget who played Isabella and Aliano who played the troll and narrator.
The play EL Kid was great and the year 5 had a blast watching it. They hope that Opera Australia can return in year six.

On the 28thof August APS brought an opera to school for the year S's. They had an unusual setting cacti. They had a brick wall to make the theme more exciting. The opera people had to be really hydrated.
The appropriation was three billy goat gruff as there were three goats one named Diego the second one called Ferdinand {big brother} and Isabella {big sister} and of course the troll/narrator.
In the opera it shows even if you are small you can achieve big things Diego fought the evil and his siblings finally accepted him it proves that he is strong in his own way.
The songs formed a very good background entertaining all of us students with the story of three siblings reuniting together.
Overall the story is very entertaining and suitable for kids.

WINNING HOUSE: FLYNN |
North Shore PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival
Over 2 days last week, 65 of Artarmon’s best athletes competed against other schools in our sports Zone at the Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen.
On Thursday, the field events were held, as well as the 1500m race. There were many Personal Best efforts thrown and jumped. A huge congrats to Leon H (Yr 5), Jayden W (Yr 6) and Nathan S (Year 6) for placing in their respective events.
On Friday, the track events were held, and they were perfect conditions for competitive running. The following people achieved a place in their events. Our Junior Girls Relay placed 1st, Shiori F (Yr 6) 3rd in 1500m, and 2nd in the 800m. Trevor M (Yr 5) 3rd in 100m. Saim S (Yr 6) 3rd in the 100m. Jack D (Yr 6) came 2nd in the 800m.
I would like to recognise the performance by Audrey G (Yr 4) for her results at the Zone Carnival this year. 2nd in 1500m, 1st in the 100m, 3rd in the 800m, 3rd in the 200m, 3rd in the Shot Putt, 1st in the High Jump and 3rd in the Long Jump. These amazing results confirmed her as the Junior Girls Age Champion for 2023.
Good luck to all of our athletes who qualified for the Regional Carnival, which will be held in Term 4.
Tennis Knockout Semi Finals
“Let’s just try and win as many games as we can” said Leon to Maksim as they plodded down to the other end to serve, down 5 games to 2. Mhaira Gupta (5HW), Natalie Lee (6SJ), Leon Hoang (5TH) and Maksim Habarovs (6JM) took to the court in Port Macquarie to play Coorabell Public School in the state tennis knockout semifinals. There were many exceptionally close sets, including the girls doubles making it to a tiebreak at 6 games all! Other highlights included a close set for Maksim in his singles, taking nearly every game to deuce and Mhaira and Maksim getting a win in their doubles.
Unfortunately, we were battling powerful winds and a particularly strong team which meant we were pipped to the post by Coorabell. A special mention must be given to Mr Habarovs and Mr Lee for doing the 8 hour round trip with the students for ‘the love of the game’.
As always, Miss Borg was extremely proud of all four students who showed incredible sportsmanship, cheering hot shots from our team and the opposition. Well done team!
Girls Cricket Knockout Team Semi-finals Match Report
On the 4th of September, Artarmon Girls Cricket Team went to Artarmon Reserve to play against Normanhurst West Public School. This was our second match which we were playing as a team, so we were all super excited when we walked down to Artarmon Reserve.
With the amount of stretches we did prior to the match, I was worried someone would break a leg before we even started playing! Our vice-captain, Nishika unfortunately lost the toss, and we were asked to bowl and field first. The whole thing was very tense, but the whole team was very supportive of all of our bowlers. Congrats to Kriti for getting two wickets for the team and Divya for one. This meant that Normanhurst made a total of 149 for 3.
After a quick break, the second innings got underway and it was our turn to bat. Kudos to Nishika for getting 28 runs for the team! All of our batsmen did fantastic, and everyone gave each ball their 100%. Our final score came down to 97 for 8, which unfortunately meant we had lost.
While we are all sad, we learned a lot from the experience and hope to play cricket in the future. Thanks very much to Mr King for organising the match and taking us down to Artarmon Reserve.
