OZ TAG
On Friday of Week 6 and 7 a group of Stage 3 students participated in the PSSA OZ Tag Gala Day at Blackmans Park in Lane Cove. Students have been practising their skills during Friday morning sports training at Artarmon Reserve and had the chance to play lots of games against other schools. Both days were a huge success and lots of fun, with everyone trying their best and improving each game. Well done to Artarmon Boys Team 1 who won their Grand Final against Willoughby Public! A big thank you to Ms Carmichael for all the organisation she put into ensuring the days ran smoothly.
On Wednesday 6th of March, a group of Year 3 and 4 girls attend the Skellern Cup which is an inter-school soccer event that aims to promote girls' involvement in sports. The girls had lots of fun playing soccer matches against other schools and improved their soccer skills throughout the day. All the girls played their best and showed lots of teamwork and encouraged each other along throughout the day. Thank you to the parents who helped out by driving the girls on the day, we could not have done it without you!

WINNING HOUSE:

Gibberagong Recount
It was an exiting day, learning about Aboriginal culture. We set off, eager to learn.
We marvelled at an Aboriginal handprint, they put handprints on their shelters to symbolise they had been there. Well, how did they put handprints on their shelter? May you ask. They used a clay called “ochre”. They mixed water with ochre to get a substance similar to water paint. They used tis to paint their body. To create handprints, they grinded dry ochre into something like powder. They put their hands on the surface they wanted to paint, then they blew the powder, leaving an outline.
Next, our class tried mixing and painting with ochre. We added water and created unique patterns with ochre. We then painted our faces with white ochre.
Then we took our shoes and socks off to go to an important place, as shoes can cause erosion. There were drawings chiselled into sandstone. The drawings symbolised that a river was dangerous, and to take a weapon and someone with you if you are crossing the river.
The Aboriginals copied someone’s shadow chiselling holes, then, they connected them, making a picture. We also found a plant with a barb on the end. Aboriginals used them to pop warts.
We learned that the Aboriginals used a tool, when beating an end, it created a sound reassembling an emu. They used this tool to attract a male emu sitting on a nest, giving time to steal an egg. One egg only, so there would be more next year.
We were discovering new weapons when this happened: “So, they attached a bone to-” The guide said. But then, Mrs Goosen came into view, A goanna in front of her. A goanna!
After the excitement, we went to the lookout and had an amazing view of the islands. We then boarded the bus and headed home after an amazing educational day.

YEAR SIX ARE GOING TO CANBERRA!
Our Year 6 students will head off on an educational tour of Canberra, our national capital, in Week 10. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $30.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
We know Year 6 will learn a great deal about the history, culture, heritage, and democracy of Australia on their trip, and have lots of fun!
International Women's Day - A special day to celebrate the women in our world!
Who is an influential woman you know, and how did she inspire you?
Rosa Parks: By combating racism and standing up for cultural equality, she is a well-known figure all around the world. She has combatted her way through segregation and has inspired me to stand up for what is right. - Weihan Huang 6MK
Emmeline Pankhurst : She stood up to give women the right to vote. She inspires me to fight for women equality. She had a strong will and determination to fix the stereotypes against women. She shows me that women have the power to change this world of inequality. She fought for my right to vote when I got older. - Chloe Li 6MK
Why do you think it’s important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
Because women's rights are important not only for women to vote, but in everyday life, as it took many generations for women to fight and receive the same rights as men. Many men have been celebrated their whole life and given different opportunities, women should too. - Isabella Wu 6IW
To remember and commemorate the sacrifices that women have made for the more balanced and equal world we share today. - Ted Wang 6IW
Compared to the past equality is amazing. However, there are still countries that haven’t improved as much, as many women still don't have equal rights and are treated horribly. Additionally, although society is much better as a whole, many people still give snippets of sexism and put down women. - Chloe Peters 6IW
Many people have accomplished things for equality for women. Serena Williams proved that women are just as strong and sporty as men. As well, Taylor Swift has proved that women can work as hard as men, and deserve the recognition they receive. - Pegella Qiu 6IW
All people should be allies as I believe that women don't deserve to be treated with inequality and also, if everyone works together, we could make the future a better place. - William Wang 6MK
3PS discussed the celebration of Ramadan. The beginning of the month of Ramadan is marked by the spotting of the crescent (new moon). The moon is considered new when it begins its new cycle around the Earth. The moon goes through phases, starting with the new moon, passing through crescent, half and gibbous moons, to the full moon, and back again. We explored the phases of the moon and the importance it plays during Ramadan.

The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students to participate in an ongoing reading program, reading a set number of books at their own reading level. It is not a competition, but a challenge to each student - to read, to read more and to read more widely.
The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024 started on Monday 26 February and concludes Friday 23 August 2024. We would encourage everyone to participate in this worthwhile Challenge.
There is a handy shortcut in your child’s Student Portal that will take them directly to the student site. As this is a NSW Department of Education Program, students use the same username and password to access the website that they use to sign into their Student Portal and the computers at school.
This is a free, state-wide program available to all NSW schools. Students are encouraged to read a certain number of books depending on their year level from a set list. These books can be readily found in our Library and at your local council libraries.
